About this Course

Metabolomics is the discovery, identification, and quantification of the metabolites in any biological sample. It is a rapidly growing field driven by advances in technologies, open and shared datasets, and systematic approaches to data analysis. The applications of metabolomics are diverse and include wastewater and environmental testing, clinical testing, drug discovery, precision medicine, disease diagnosis, agriculture, nutrition, and more.

Upon successful completion, the learners will have recognized competencies, skills and knowledge in:

  • Metabolomics tools, instruments, software and methodologies
  • Experimental design, standardization, and bias in metabolomics
  • Data generation, curation, integrity and quality assessment
  • Compound identification and discovery
  • Univariate and multivariate statistical approaches
  • Biochemical pathway mapping, metabolite clusters, and metabolomics data interpretation
  • Scientific literature reporting metabolomics findings
  • Applications of metabolomics

By the end of the course, participants will produce an e-portfolio which demonstrates the skills and competencies for basic proficiency in metabolomics.

Designed for

The Metabolomics micro-credential was created for learning and upskilling of individuals who are beginning to work with metabolomics and/or wish to adopt metabolomics into their workflows in current or future employment. The course is designed for professionals who have a combination of education and/or work experience in a relevant discipline.

The language of instruction is English.

Course Structure and Delivery

This 39-hour micro-credential is structured around:

  • 28 hours of synchronous online learning
  • 11 hours of report work

Real-time delivery is scheduled with four full-day (8-hour) sessions, including lunch and breaks, held using Zoom web conferencing. The real-time sessions will include seminars, break-out sessions and workshops, as well as expert presentations and feedback.

Following the intensive sessions, learners will work on a final report with support through one-on-one sessions.

Course Schedule

ONLINE, GROUP-PACED

Real-time, online sessions will take place:

  • Tuesday, May 23
  • Wednesday, May 24
  • Thursday, May 25
  • Friday, May 26

Online sessions will be from 9 am to 5 pm in Pacific Daylight Time (PDT).  One-to-one sessions will be held the week of May 29th to June 2nd, 2023.

While learner attendance is mandatory for all sessions, we understand the challenges of online learning and are happy to discuss reasonable accommodation requests.

Credential Awarded

Learners who successfully complete this course will receive a UBC Okanagan Non-credit Letter of Proficiency.

Requirements

PREREQUISITES

This non-credit credential has no formal pre-requisites. Participants will have typically earned an undergraduate degree or college diploma in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related discipline, or have gained a similar level of knowledge through other experiences. The content is designed for adult learners; participants must be 18 years or older. The language of instruction is English.

Learners will be asked to complete a survey prior to the start of the course to gauge background knowledge and to better understand their motivation for participation. Learners may be encouraged to complete preparatory materials prior to the start of the course.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

This course will involve live sessions conducted through Zoom, with simultaneous access to a virtual computer environment via a remote desktop connection.  Learners require access to a computer with speakers, microphone, and a webcam.  It is recommended that learners use a computer with an Intel Core i5 processor or equivalent, at least 16 Gb of memory (RAM), a hard drive with free space, an internet connection of at least 6 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload speeds, a large monitor or dual monitors, and an updated version of Zoom.

All course materials will be available through Canvas Catalog one week prior to the start of the course.

Instructional Team

DR. SUSAN MURCH

Susan Murch has been a Professor of Chemistry at UBC Okanagan since 2005. Her research uses mass spectrometry to investigate the chemicals produced by plants and how plant chemicals affect human health. She teaches Introductory Analytical Chemistry, Plant Chemistry, and Metabolomics. She has been the recipient of various awards for research and teaching, including Canada Research Chair in Natural Products Chemistry, UBCO Researcher of the Year, and the Womxn in Metabolomics Mentorship Award.

Additional Info

FEES

THE NON-REFUNDABLE FEE FOR THIS COURSE IS $4500.  Fee is inclusive of GST. All instructional content required to complete the course is available through the course website. There are no additional fees for textbooks..

COURSE SURVEYS

Learners will be asked to take part in pre-and post-course surveys that include information regarding current employment status, educational background, professional goals, and an evaluation of subject matter knowledge prior to and following the learning experience. In particular, there will be a survey distributed six months after the completion of this course. This information will be collected privately and used for the purpose of understanding the impact of the course in meeting the professional development needs of participants and to satisfying the reporting requirements of the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training.
